midsummer festival in

historical norskot

The couple Sir Olsen and Lady Fenja as well as trainer Kimi were served the traditional herbal schnapps to loud cheers. Loud noise and drinking have been part of Midsummer customs since ancient times. It was believed that this would bring good luck. That it could drive away the bad spirits and thus ensure a good harvest.

As far as the bad spirits were concerned, they were more likely to be awakened than driven away. Because just when things were getting particularly fun, in the middle of the round dance, a scout rushed at full speed onto the forecourt of the forest house. The messenger dismounted from his steaming horse and hurried up the hill towards Sir Olsen. He bowed and handed him a despatch. Sir Olsen scanned the lines.

Everyone watched spellbound as Sir Olsen raised his voice: "Thank you Scout Erik for your haste. You will now be taken care of…” Sir Olsen asked his squire Barne to take care of the scout and his horse with his eyes.

To the waiting faces at the fire place, Sir Olsen spoke in a firm voice: "Unfortunately, our midsummer festival is now considered to be over immediately," Sir Olsen looked at each of the boys and trainer Kimi. "Colonel Arvid von Bendikt announces that haste is required. The attack of our troops is imminent. You will find out everything else later.”
